Descriere Workshop: CyberSecurity for Parents
The Internet has drastically changed the way children interact with the world. They have access to in-depth knowledge, tools to express their creativity, and people from all over the world. Yet along with offering a fascinating, new way to connect with the world, the Internet also offers new risks like exposure to inappropriate material, online viruses, revealing too much personal information, or cyberbullying.
Security and privacy means something very different to children who’ve grown up online. Almost everything around them encourages them to explore deeper and share personal information. It’s a way to have fun, make new friends, learn new information and express themselves. But not everything is save to explore and not everything in their lives is meant to be shared.
The purpose off this workshop is to explore and discuss:
Internet safety. Children use a variety of online services, and each of these services can have different safety concerns. However, there are some basic tips which you can employ no matter how your children use the Internet.
Privacy settings. Most social media sites and apps have privacy settings. Teach and encourage kids to adjust these settings so only people they have approved can see what they post.
Location-tags. Some phones and apps use GPS to keep track of users’ locations. Consider disabling location-tags in their settings, especially those on photos.
Creating strong passwords. Explain and teach kids how and why to create strong passwords.
Avoiding online scams. Explain that scams often target children and teens promising money or prizes. Tell them never to provide personal information on a website or pop-up without checking with a trusted adult first. Teach your child never to open e-mails from unknown senders and to use settings on IM programs to block messages from people they do not know.
